10:30 - 11:30 DIYbio Barcelona

Daniel Grajales García.
PhD student at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CIN2), sponsored by the Mexican Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), he currently works on the integration of a lab on a chip biosensor based on photonic interferometric devices with applications on environmental sensing and human health. He is among the promoters of a group of bio - and technology enthusiasts wishing to gather and eventually build a DIY bio- community lab in Barcelona area.
Abstract: was founded in 2008 with the mission of establishing a vibrant, productive and safe community of DIY biologists. Central to its mission is the belief that biotechnology and greater public understanding about it has the potential to benefit everyone. DIYbio Barcelona is being established (this article in ARA (in Catalan) gives some insight on their activities - Els ‘biohackers’ treuen el nas a Barcelona), promoting collaborative learning activities and projects, where participants design, grow and their own biomaterials using only Open Source hardware they fabricate themselves, in order to run a biolab. Sample activities already proposed include building a microscope from scratch, a fluorescent bacteria bulb, your own bioreactor to produce your own electricity, ink, food or whatever you may imagine, e-waste safety/electronic components upcycling to reuse for DIYbio, etc... A presentation of its philosophy, activities and concepts such as biocommons will be presented in the seminar.
This seminar will take place in room: 52.223 (Poble Nou Campus) on 30/01/15, and it will be followed by another one:
11:30 - 12:30 Alma Systems
