Origin and epigenetic programming of human primordial germ cells

Scientific sessions, PRBB CRG Conferences

Germline and Epigenomics Research, Physiology, Development and Neuroscience Department,The Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge. Cambridge, UK

Azim Surani, from The Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge, UK, studies primordial germ cells (PGCs), precursors to eggs and sperm, in the early embryo. He specifically aims to discover how any cell could be converted into a germ cell. Furthermore, he is investigating the unique properties that confer the immortal state on germ cells. Detailed understanding of the mechanism involved will be valuable for the detection and eradication of immortal cancer cells. He has been invited by Bernhard Payer (CRG).
