Simoes, from the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre in Athens, Greece, aims at understanding the mechanism of regulation of dendritic cells immune responses. She demonstrated that Opn is highly expressed in the lungs of asthmatic patients and of mice with allergic airway inflammation and exerts dual and opposing effects on Th2-mediated allergic airway disease. She also contributed with important findings on the effect of exercise rehabilitation in skeletal muscle remodelling and inflammation from patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), opening new frontiers for studying and treating respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD. She has been invited by Esther Barreiro (IMIM).
