Didier Raoult, from the Unité de Recherches sur les Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales Emergentes, at the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de la Méditerranée in Marseille, France, is an expert in tropical and emergent infectious diseases. He played a key role in the discovery of Mimivirus, the largest virus known to date, and his team has identified and described more than 90 new pathogenic bacteria. He is particularly interested in Rickettsia, Bartonella, Q fever and Whipple’s disease. Lately he has developed and interest for probiotics and their role in health. Particularly, he is investigating whether there is a link between probiotics added in the industrial dairy products and obesity. He has been invited by Cédric Notredame (CRG).
