Lluís Ribas de Pouplana

Gene Translation Laboratory, Institute for Research in Biomedicine. Barcelona, Spain

Lluís Ribas de Pouplana, from the Gene Translation Laboratory at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Barcelona, Spain, focuses on the mechanisms of protein synthesis in human pathogens. He is particularly interested in the roles of an essential family of proteins in the causing agents of Malaria, Chagas disease, Amebiasis, and bacterial meningitis. His studies focus on a critical step in gene translation: the aminoacylation of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs), a reaction that ensures that the information encoded in each gene is faithfully traduced to protein. Applying techniques from chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology he aims to characterize and manipulate this molecular process, and apply it to biomedical purposes.

He has been invited by Roderic Guigó (CRG).
