Antonio Lazcano, from the Science Faculty at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, has studied the origin and early evolution of life for more than 35 years, most recently through the analysis of the sequences of genes and genomes. He is especially interested in the biochemical bases of the RNA world, and has worked on the history of science. He is also director of the newly created Lynn Margulis Centre for Evolutionary Biology at the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, which aims to promote the research, teaching and dissemination of evolutionary biology in Latin America. He has been invited by Jaume Bertranpetit (UPF).
