Alberto Macario, from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Maryland at Baltimore, USA, is working on chaperonopathies, a type of diseases in which one or more chaperones are deficient. Chaperonology is an emerging discipline that has unveiled a variety of chaperones with distinct evolution, structure, function, pathology, and potential applications. The understanding of chaperonopathies may lead to the use of chaperone genes and proteins to treat chaperonopathies and other conditions, such as cancer, in which chaperones have shown to induce antitumor immunity. The study of chaperone networks also helps to understand protein homeostasis better. He has been invited by Inma Hernández (IMIM).
