Martin Fussenegger, from the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE), ETH Zurich, in Switzerland, is a world leader in the field of synthetic biology. He works in several programs interfacing with biopharmaceutical manufacturing, gene therapy and tissue engineering. These include the development of safe, efficient and affordable gene and protein transfer technologies; the epigenetic reprogramming of mammalian cells to improve transgene control modalities and lock cells into a desired phenotype; or the design of scaffold-free microtissues to study vascularization, transdifferentiation, intercellular crosstalk, tissue-implant fusion and electrogenic characteristics in a multicellular three-dimensional configuration. He has been invited by Mark Isalan (CRG).
