Michael Dickinson, from the Department of Biology, University of Washington in Seattle, US, tries to elucidate the means by which flies accomplish their aerodynamic feats. These include neuronal signalling within brains, the dynamics of unsteady fluid flow, the structural mechanics of composite materials, and the behaviour of complex nonlinear systems.
This requires an integration of biology, engineering, fluid mechanics, and control theory. The long term goal is to develop a model that can provide insight to the behaviour and robustness of complex systems in general. He has been invited by David Hayes (CRG).
