CEXS-UPF/IBE: Ricard Solé and Sergi Valverde study the evolution of programming languages

Ricard Solé and Sergi Valverde, head and visiting professor of the Complex Systems Lab from the Departament of Experimental and Health Sciences (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), sign a scientific article published in the Journal of Royal Society Interface last 20 th of May. The article proposes the comparison between cultural and biological evolution through the study of the evolution of programming languages that lead social and technological progress during the last 60 years.

The large scale historical development of programming languages has marked social and technological advances in the last half century. Ricard Solé and Sergi Valverde analyze their historical connections using network theory and reconstructed phylogenetic networks. The results of the study show that the evolution of the programming languages is uneven, determined by innovation periods where previous languages are mixed in order to create new ones. The article offers a new method that can be extended to many other fields beyond the study of programming languages, providing a new framework for quantifying cultural and technological developments carefully.
