In this paper, Tomàs Marquès-Bonet and colleagues look for human specific differential methylated regions comparing Bisulfite data of human to the rest of great apes.
They find that these regions are, surprisingly, far away from the promoters and tend to be enriched for human specific single point mutations, which highlights the impact of genetic background and epigenetic modifications.
