CEXS-UPF: Núria López-Bigas has won one of the European Research Council grants

News from CEXS-UPF

The ICREA researcher Núria López-Bigas, leader of the research group of Biomedical Genomics from the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB), joint programme of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), has won one of the ERC Consolidator grants recently given by the European Research Council (ERC). These grants are intended to the development of innovative and excellent projects conducted by young postdoctoral researchers of a consolidated career between 7 and 12 years.

The team of López-Bigas focuses its research in studying cancer from a genetic point of view. Genetic alterations are, ultimately, responsible for turning a healthy cell into a tumor one, and understanding their importance allows the improvement of the understanding of the biology of the disease and the development of new treatments.

The developing project using the ERC grant aims to characterize the role of mutations in non-coding regions in the most prevalent tumors of the population. The work will count with the collaboration of the International Cancer Genome Consortium, an organization created for the classification of the molecular profile of 50 different types of cancer. The work of López-Bigas, of 5-year long, will identify those non-coding alterations that are more relevant for tumor biology through computational methods and will explore new therapeutic strategies that can revert its effects by means of the creation of the corresponding cellular models.
