The Transnational Alliance for Genetic Counseling (TAGC) arrives to Barcelona in the occasion of its tenth anniversary and to organize the 4th International Congress. The event will take place on Thursday and Friday, 19 and May 20 in Josep Marull Room of Hospital del Mar. The master's degree in Genetic Counseling offered by the UPF Barcelona School of Management will act as the host entity with Clara Serra, coordinator of the mentioned master and associate professor at Pompeu Fabra University, as a representative and member of the Executive Planning Committee of the congress.
The exponential progress of new technologies has uncovered the genetic origin of several diseases, many of them little known and difficult to treat. This emergence of genetic knowledge has led to the need to train experts in the communication on genetic diseases, capable of advising patients and families on family planning issues related to the disease (understand the heritage, know the risk of transmission to offspring, etc.).
TAGC strives to foster communication and collaboration among the international genetic counseling community and enhance genetic counseling education transnationally. This conference will bring together representatives from 17 countries, most of them directors of master's programs in genetic counseling in their own countries, to share experiences, promote global networking and identify strengths and areas for improvement in the professional genetic counseling and educational approaches. Among the invited speakers are Kelly Ormond (USA), Tina Wessels (South Africa), Diana Scotcher (UK) and Barbara Biesecker (USA).
