CRG: New approaches in medical genomics: A step forward in Parkinson’s disease

A group of scientists from the CRG, in collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) and the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), have discovered how the production of alpha-sinuclein, a protein that accumulates in the neurons of Parkinson's and multisystemic atrophy patients, is controlled.

The researchers predicted the interactions of the alpha-sinuclein with other factors using the catRAPID algorithm, previously developed by the group at the CRG. "Our bioinformatics method showed several candidates and we analyzed experimentally the most relevant ones for these diseases", explains Gian Gaetano Tartaglia, ICREA research professor at the CRG and the first author of the article published in Nucleic Acids Research.
