IMIM: Treating anemia in patients before heart surgery improves survival

The study was recently published in the American Journal of Cardiology

A study by cardiologists at the Hospital del Mar and IMIM (Hospital del Mar Institute for Medical Research) has demonstrated that treating anemic patients by intravenous administration of recombinanthuman erythropoietin (rhEPO) and iron before they are operated of a valvular heart disease improves postoperative survival, reduces the need for transfusions and shortens hospitalization.
