CEXS-UPF: New NextSeq 500 Sequencing System from Illumina

News from CEXS-UPF

The UPF Genomics Core Facility has acquired the NextSeq 500 Sequencing System from Illumina. The new equipment is already available for sequencing in the Genomics Core Facilty Lab. This is the first NexSeq 500 in Spain available as a service for researchers.

The NextSeq 500 Sequencing System is the first desktop high throughput sequencer. This instrument is a highly flexible platform, with two output modes: the High Output mode generating 400 Million reads (up to 120 Gb of data) in less than 30 hours, and the Mid Output generating 130 Million reads (39 Gb). Its speed and simplicity makes it a suitable tool for a wide range of applications, from targeted resequencing to RNA profiling and whole-exome or genome sequencing. In a single run it can analyze a whole human genome, about 12 exomes and 36 trancriptomes, 24 Chip-Seq or 96 samples for gene panel sequencing at high coverages.

This instrument represents an important novelty in next-generation sequencing, merging high-troughput sequencing into a desktop sequencer and allowing to perform the most popular sequencing applications at different scales in less than one day.
