Lynne Maquat, from the University of Rochester Medical Center, School of Medicine and Dentistry, in New York, US, focuses on RNA decay pathways, and in particular in the so-called nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) or mRNA surveillance, a system that surveys all newly synthesized mRNAs. Her work has uncovered unexpected relationships between long noncoding RNAs and transposable elements in RNA decay pathways. Her studies try to uncover and understand the mRNP proteins, translation factors and nucleases that trigger NMD in order to help in the design of therapies for nonsense-generated diseases.
She has been invited by Rory Johnson (CRG).
