On 23 and 24 November, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican organized the seminar "Narcotics: Problems and Solutions of this Global Issue". Nearly 30 doctors, researchers, scientists, judges and members of civil society involved in the fight against drug addiction and its social and health were invited. From all of them, Maldonado was the only Spanish invited to participate.
The workshop focused specifically on the scientific aspect, presenting the consequences of substance abuse on our bodies and brains, as well as the potential medical uses of certain drugs for specific diseases and disorders. Maldonado showed his knowledge in the field in a talk entitled "The Endocannabinoid System: Prospects and Risks of Therapeutic Cannabis Consumption." Other aspects that were discussed included the illicit and relatively easy production of drugs; strategies that fight the conditions fostering the use of drugs; exploitation of young children in criminal organizations that distribute narcotics; and effects of soft drugs legalization on our society.
With this workshop, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences aims to reach a consensus that investing in education, prevention, health care, addiction, treatment and, in certain cases, alternatives to incarceration would do more to end the drug grade than relying primarily on the criminalization of the victims.
