A new possibility to diagnose genomic instability related to diseases has been discovered. It is the result of a study where a new control mechanism has been identified. This mechanism, regulated by the Mrc1 protein, coordinates and stops the process of duplication of the genome to avoid collision and consequent genomic instability. Genomic instability, such as the loss of a chromosome or the wrong duplication of DNA, is the main source of mutations in the genome and the main motor of tumor development.
The relevance of the research led by Francesc Posas and Eulàlia de Nadal from the DCEXS-UPF opens a path to understand how the cells of our organism that do not coordinate correctly protein production and the duplication of the genome suffer changes in their genome and start a process of uncontrolled proliferation. - CS / PRBB
