Art, lectures, experiments, visits, magic... but above all, science. This is the usual menu of the PRBB Open Day, held every first Saturday of October. From 10 am onwards the park throws open its laboratories and organises outreach activities for all audiences throughout the day.
During this celebration of popular science one can visit any part of the building on guided tours given by the researchers themselves. If there are questions still unanswered, lectures on different topics are also offered throughout the day, and at the end of the event there is a scientific café.
In the latest edition on October 1, 2016 was a success thanks to the participation of more than 300 volunteers between researchers, technical and support staff from the different PRBB centres. More than 3,500 people enjoyed a full program that included guided tours, lectures, experiments and a scientific cafe, among others.
We look forward to see you next Saturday, October 7, 2017!
The PRBB centres organize several educational activities and workshops aimed at both students and teachers all through the year.
Elementary students can experience first-hand the job of a researcher and learn about the zebrafish as an experimental animal with the workshop Entrevista a un científico (Interview a scientist). Or explore the cell’s world with the workshop Ciencia al CRG: La célula, una fábrica bien organizada (Science at the CRG: The cell, a well-organised factory).
For secondary and high school students there is a wide range of activities and workshops such as the PlayDecide role plays that deal with issues like Animal experimentation and Genetic counselling by the CEXS-UPF, Solve the enigma by the CRG or Stem cells in biomedical research by the CMRB.
Scientific lectures for students on several issues such as the use and effects of drugs, genomics or complex systems are also available. The offer also includes experimental workshops and guided visits through the programs Proyecto Accés by the IMIM, Conoce el Centro de Medicina Regenerativa by the CMRB, Contaminación ambiental: ¿cuáles son los riesgos para la salud humana? (How environmental contaminants affect us) organized by ISGlobal or Conoce la investigación del CEXS-UPF y del IBE.
For high school students who are preparing their research projects, informative sessions are organized about topics such as the use of stem cells and regenerative medicine, with the Regenerator programme by the CRMB, or Alzheimer's with the Pasqual Maragall Foundation’s programme.
The Centre for Genomic Regulation offers to the academic community training courses like Las nuevas BIO II, del laboratorio al aula (The new BIO II, from the lab to the classroom) for biology’ssecondary and high school teachers and the Actívate con la célula (Get active with the cell!) workshop for elementary school teachers.
PRBB a la carte
The scientific activity at the PRBB is largely funded by taxpayers’ money and therefore we are happy to tell people how their money has been invested. We invite members of the public to visit us so that we can explain the scientific activity taking place in the park. The PRBB sporadically offers groups of 15 to 20 people the opportunity to visit the building at dates and times previously agreed. As it is a highly specialized centre of scientific production, the tour is limited to common areas of the park.
If you are interested in visiting the PRBB, please send a petition to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get in touch as soon as possible.
The UPF Faculty of Life and Health Sciences and the PRBB have, every year since 2005, organised the PRBB Research Award in life and health sciences. This is aimed at high school students, with the purpose of encouraging research in biomedical science.
The five best research projects in any discipline of life and health sciences are awarded prizes. The projects must be developed during the academic year in a private or public secondary school in Catalonia.
So far, more than 1,200 students from all over Catalonia have participated. For more information and the rules of the competition, please visit the award website: premi.prbb.org
