Odom, from the Regulatory Systems Biology Laboratory of Cancer Research UK at the Cambridge Research Institute in Cambridge, is focused on understanding the systems-level transcriptional mechanisms underlying mammalian cell specification, which are often perturbed in carcinomas and diabetes, using the liver hepatocyte as a model. He takes an integrative approach, combining genome-wide transcription factor binding, gene expression perturbation using genetic manipulations, comparative genomics, and physiological approaches to understand on a systems-wide basis how a tissue is defined. Odom uses chromatin immunoprecipitation combined with deep sequencing to identify the complete set of transcription factor binding events for tissue-specific transcriptional regulators. His aim is to reveal mechanistic insight into how directly-bound genes are controlled, and can serve to nucleate systemswide models of transcriptional regulation. He is also interested in miRNA functional genomics. He studies the identification of candidate miRNAs which may be involved in tissue-specific transcriptional regulation. He has been invited by Salvador Aznar-Benitah and Ben Lehner (CRG).
