Cédric Notredame is a group leader at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona (Spain). Molecular biologist by training, he graduated from Toulouse University and completed his PhD in Bioinformatics (1998), at the EMBL-EBI (Cambridge, UK). After a Post Doc at the NIMR-MRC (London), Cedric became a CNRS staff scientist (Marseille) and a group leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (Lausanne). His main interests lie in the development of novel algorithms for the multiple comparison of evolutionarily related sequences and subsequent phylogenetic or structural modelling. He is the leading author of T-Coffee, a popular multiple sequence alignment packages able to combine structural information and sequences.

Talk summary

The recent report of a large number of new long non-coding RNA genes in human (known as lincRNAS or lncRNA) has been one of the main discoveries of these last years. According to various estimates and extrapolations, there could be anywhere between 15311.000 and 50.000 such genes in the human genome, and a comparable number in most mammals.

Attention is now shifting towards other species (model or not) in order to enable comparative genomics approaches. I will present some of the methods recently developed within our group for the systematic evolutionary profiling of non-coding RNA across genomes, and their subsequent analysis through multiple sequence alignment modeling. I will then develop some of our recent work on the comparative analysis done between human and various mammals such as cow, pig and mouse.
