A large number of new protein coding sequences was identified in the mouse genome using massive sequencing techniques. These potential proteins are not functional, most likely most of them will disappear, but, maybe, some of them, will acquire new functions and will remain in the genome.
This study, led by researchers from IMIM and DCEXS-UPF, was published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution and could contribute to understand how the genes are created. “This work gives insight into the process of the formation of new genes that took place at the beginning of life and which still takes place today” explains Mar Alba, the coordinator of this research. -Carlos Sierra/PRBB
